What is the College Level Examination Program (CLEP)?

The College Board’s College Level Examination Program (CLEP) is a nationally recognized credit-by-examination program that provides high school students an opportunity to demonstrate their mastery of college-level materials in introductory subjects and earn college credit. Developed by the College Board, CLEP has been the most widely trusted credit-by-examination program for over 40 years, accepted by 2,900 colleges and universities and administered in over 1,800 test centers. A passing score on particular tests allows students to earn between 3 and 12 credits of college-level coursework before leaving high school, depending on the guidelines of the specific postsecondary institutions. *Please note that this credit can not be used towards a high schoool diploma. For example, if you CLEP out of English 101, that will not count as your 4th high school English. You would still have to take either English IV or a dual enrollment English class.

How do you know which colleges accept which CLEP exams?

Most colleges and universities list which exams they accept and the passing score required. Below are links to a few schools of interest:

There are two great resources to prepare for a CLEP exam:

How do I register for a CLEP exam?

CLEP exams can be taken at most major testing centers including the ones at McNeese and SOWELA. Student may register for an exam here: https://clep.collegeboard.org/register-for-an-exam

Some students might be able to take the CLEP exam at a high school testing location. Please see Mrs. Andrepont for more information.
